bout 4 or 5 weeks ago, I started with an annoying cough. It was diagnosed as likely either viral or allergies, and really not much to do but let it run its course.
Last Wednesday, I started feeling pain and some popping sensations in my left-side. As the week progressed, so did the pain. By Saturday, it was becoming quite bad. By Sunday, it reached excruciating.
This morning, I went in to have a doctor check it out. I cracked a rib. From all the coughing.
The coughing is subsiding now, but the rib may take up to three weeks to heal. The body brace I'm in now is at least providing enough support I can move about some.

12:28 pm - Fun with magnets?

I have come into posession of some 45 pairs of neodymium magnest, 33 of them from identical model drives.
Aside from putting the 33 identically mounted magnets into a ring (woo?), I am at a loss as to what to do with these. But they're too awesome to throw out.
I've already pretty much permanently adhered various notes and coupons to the fridge with the last batch of neodymiums I got.

It seems every time I log into Legends of Norrath, I have more cards!
I just logged in to Legends of Norrath and found 5 more 15-card booster packs in my inventory.
(It's one of the few modern games, and the only EQ-related game, that runs on my laptop).

10:31 am - Graphics Conversions

I'm thinking of converting my non-photograph raster graphics files to vectored graphics.
Anyone have much experience with doing this? I've played a little with potrace. Looks like it'll work best with purely black-and-white images that contain mostly solid lines.
Haven't tried AutoTrace yet.
[Update 16:39]
Looks like AutoTrace is broken in the FreeBSD ports tree. Specifically, libemf is marked as broken.

Apparently, LiveJournal saw fit to eat my post instead of post it. So you get the short version:
Good birthday yesterday. Lilith got me Bumper Battlers Bumblebee, Keiris got me Leader Class Animated Megatron and a delicious dinner for two at Chili's. For dessert we ate a delicious white chocolate volcano cake with white chocolate fudge filling, a scoop of vanilla ice-cream with a white chocolate shell topping it, and raspberry sauce.
Bumper Battlers Bumblebee is funny. Lilith likes it a lot.
Leader Class Megatron is awesome. I have decided the laugh shall be queued up at all times.
Animated figures to date: Megatron (Leader), Bulkhead (Leader), Starscream, Grimlock, Lockdown, Bumblebee (Delux and Bumper Battlers).
Still looking for: Prowl, Ratchet, Black Arachnia, Jazz, Soundwave, Sentinel, Lugnut, Blitzwing, and Ultra Magnus.

I caught some nasty flu-thing in early July that took me out for two solid weeks, plus a few days, followed by two more weeks of just feeling generally weakened. Only in the past week have I started feeling really better, and much time has been spent on catching up on the months worth of stuff that had piled up.
Shower's still unusable. Three contractors came out from May through June to provide an estimate. None of them ever got back to us. None of them have ever responded to phone or email.
Yesterday we got a fourth contractor to come out. This guy gave us an estimate, but has gone silent when I asked how soon work could begin. I just want a friggen shower! In my own house! I just feel wierd showering at work.
More updates to come as I get back into the swing of things. Kids are doing good. Work is keeping me busy. So very busy. Now, back to work.

Yesterday I was out in the courtyard cutting firewood while my 3-year old daughter played with chalk nearby. We were just chit-chatting about nothing in particular when she suddenly brought this up:
Lils: Daddy? If you see skeletons walking around, you have to kill them. You have to get a real sword and kill them.
DadXiph: [Confused, as we were just talking about favorite colors] But they're skeletons. They're already dead.
Lils: Yes, but if they're walking then they're undead and you have to kill them again.
DadXiph: Right. But a sword's better against zombies and mummies. I think a crushing weapon might do better against skeletons. Like a hammer, or a mace maybe.
Lils: Ok. Then you have to use a flail. But you have to use a real flail, my pool toy flail won't work; it's just pretend.
I'm so proud. If ever we get assaulted by the undead, I know I can count on her!

There is a dead deer under my camaro.
It was there when we got home last night.
Santa Cruz Animal Services says to put it in a plastic bag and place it in the provided garbage bin.
We don't have any plastic bags large enough for an adult doe, and it's bigger than the garbage bin anyhows.
I'd cut it up for natural disposal, but with all the recent dead mice showing up around the cars over the past month, I'm concerned there may be something more to this.
I'd really like to know how it managed to wedge itself under the car. Makes me think of this.
